There is other pieces of pottery in the picture with good results for White Butterfly Glaze.

Great result for this glaze.

White Butterfly Glaze.

For Cone 10 Firing.

Potash Feldspar.   45

Eckalite    15

Talc     25

Cresta BB    15.

I Substitute  Eckalite for Kaolin and Cresta BB for Ball Clay to get my results.

Oxidation.

Oxidation result – A super smooth butterfly white glaze.

Reduction

Nearly the same as Oxidation, very stable glaze, due to it high clay content.

It is a good base, to mix with under or overglaze stains.

Avoid those that are not compatible with its relatively high magnesium content.

Scoring Clay. What and Why do have to Score. Join Two Pieces of Clay.

Scoring Clay.

Scratching your clay.

You score your  pieces of clay  before adding slip, this help two pieces to stick together.

It is pottery glue. You can stick to pieces of clay together, to make one piece of pottery.

What and Why do have to Score.

You score your clay so it has something to stick to, Slip and scoring is joining clay together.

Join Two Pieces of Clay.

The above picture above, I have used Slip and Scoring to add my decorations.

First I made the flowers, then added them on the pot.

You can use anything to score with, as long as you scratch where you are joining your clay pieces.

What is slip. Slip is to join two pieces of clay together.

Slip is Clay with  water added to make it into a paste.

Some people will grind there dry clay down, add water and mix together.

Some people will then sieve there mix of water and clay, so there is no lumps.

I put my shavings of clay in a container, and add water.

You do not want lumps in your slip.

my slip containers

Using Slip.

Joining two pieces of clay together you should use slip, and score your clay.

Slip is used like glue join two pieces together.

Sieved slip can be used to decorate your pottery.

Some of the ways are to colour your slip with stains, or oxides.

Brush on, Pipe on and build up layers.

This is slip with oxide added.

There is Recipes for slip.

Hand Building Pottery. Making a Large Pot Plant Container.

Hand Building Pottery.

Building a item using clay,  you can build any thing.

It is like play dough. With clay you can fire your pieces to make them very hard.

To join two pieces of clay use Slip, and Score your clay first. Some times you use small coils to add to joins.

Building a Large pot.

Hand Building you can use every bit of your clay no waste.  Very little water is used.

So I have decided to build a large pot, and I have put flowers and leaves over it.

The pot after being built stands 22cm high. and 17cm across the top.

This  pot will lose, Shrink about 15% of it size. I will be a lot smaller.

Ho

How I built this pot.

This pot was a all day build.

First I cut the base, for it to stand on. Then I used coils to build it higher.

I rolled up some clay and rolled it into a coil. Flatten the coil a little bit, the Slipped and scored the clay to add the coil.

I built it up to the height  I wanted. Then covered it with plastic, so it would not dry to quickly.

Next day I added the decorations. Slip and Scoring to add my flowers, and every thing else.

Now I will wait two weeks before I do the first firing. Bisque firing . Your pot has to be dry. Other wise it will  break when fired.

I will update this page, after I have glaze this pot. This I hope to add colour to my leaves and flowers.

Happy Potting.

Have a great day.

Black Underglaze- Testing this black underglaze.

How do you make underglaze.

I have looked up a lot of different recipes, not having much success.

I own lots of different minerals.

When I started to do pottery, there was a lady selling all her pottery items .

In those pottery items I  purchased  a lot of mineral powders,  So I can have a go at mixing my own underglaze.

Most of my supplies I get for pottery, cost a lot in postage.

For me to buy underglaze liquid, and get it sent  cost a lot. So I have to give making my own a go, where I can.

So I have found this recipe, all I can do is have a go and make it, and see what the end result will be.

The main colour I use in underglaze  is Black.

So to get the black colour I add Red Iron Oxide. and Cobalt Carbonate.

Recipe for Underglaze.

The black underglaze

Feldspar, Kaolin, Calcite and Silica.

The picture above is the underglaze mix,it is not black colour.

Have to wait until I fire to see the colour it turns out to be.

The Brown Underglaze.

Feldspar, Kaolin, Ball Clay. Calcite, Silica and Red Iron Oxide.

Updates of this underglaze firing will happen when I do the 2 Firing. See what colour it is.

Cup with underglaze.
Cup with underglaze.

I ended up painting all the pot with the underglaze mixture.

Here are the results.

I put a clear glaze over the top.

Seeing the end result, I think I can improve it by, Put more coats of the underglaze on.

The colour is spots of black, with cream, brown on a shiny surface.

Here is the result of bought underglaze with clear glaze over the top.

The underglaze has three coats.

Covered in Plastic wait to do a glaze firing.
Covered in Plastic wait to do a glaze firing.
After glazing

This turned out OK. The picture I transfer on the pot, I could of cleaned it up a  bit.

My Pottery I do is not perfect. Just looks great.

Here is a picture of underglaze used only once and wiped off, with a moist sponge.

First draw your pattern or picture on your bisque wear pottery.

Use a tool to scratch your pattern in the clay.

Paint underglaze where you want it to go. only need one coat.

Let dry, with a moist sponge wipe underglaze away.

Top of this pot I put a Glaze around the top rim, then I put a clear glaze over the whole cup.

Next time I will put clear glaze over then, the top glaze last.

I do not do test tiles, I make something in pottery then, I will find out the colours.

You learn from your mistakes.

Pottery Making – Firing Pottery Gas Kiln.

Pottery Making – Firing Pottery Gas Kiln.

I  glazed my pottery and put them in the kiln for two weeks, before firing. just waiting for a day to fire my pots.

Firing the kiln takes nearly the hole day.

Glazer used in this firing.

No143 Butter White.

Rutile blue with Red Iron Oxide.

Ice cream.

B Blue.

Rutile Blue with 2 Cobalt Carb.

The firing was not hot enough some colours were great, glazers ran and stuck to the shelf, other burnt out .

My next glazing will be one colour through out the kiln, I will be able to see the different colours the glazer melt or don’t melt.

Bottom shelf in the gas kiln.

Second Shelf in my gas kiln.

Third shelf.

The results are not good. Here are some of the colours that came out.

This plate had underglaze painted on and clear glaze  over the top. Sitting on the bottom shelf.

This dish went in for it second firing. I put retile blue over the top. It does look better.

Another bowl that went in for second firing. The green burnt out.

Cups and bowls, nice colours the top of the rims, the glaze was burnt off.

The container above third time firing

. The glaze was not melting . Came out nice glaze, but the container cracked.

This glaze was nice. the pottery dish was not compressed .

Will that is  all for this firing. When  Gas Kiln Firing, You get some different colours, might get a good firing.  Next Time.

Happy Potting.

Pottery Glaze. Butterfly White Glaze.

This is my White Butterfly Glaze.

A super smooth white glaze.

Cone 9-10.

Best results cone 9 , cone 10 .

So far it  is  coming out a nice cream white glaze when mixed.

Works well with other colour glazers on top and underneath

As you can see it look creamy.

When mixing your glazers make sure you wear a mask.

Sieve you liquid glaze a couple of times.

After a few glazing I will sieve my glaze again.

Recipe For White Butterfly.

Feldspar           45

Kaolin             15

Talc                  25

Ball Clay          15

You can use this glaze as a base glaze.

Great to add other glazers over the top.

Add stains for under glazing or over glazing

Try this glaze mix a small batch first, and brush it on.

This bowl was first dipped in butterfly. then had another glaze put on outside and splash on the inside.

Came out very nice.

Glazing your pottery, you get different results every time you fire . we have found a lot of our pots have had glazers burnt off.

the kiln was to hot, different shelves have different heat.

We get very excited when it is time to open the kiln.

Some off the pots are good, some not so good.

Love doing pottery.

Happy Potting.

Have a great day.

Enjoy what you make.

Pottery Glaze. Rutile Blue Glaze. Cone 9-10.

Rutile Blue Glaze. Cone 9-10.

Rutile Blue shows a lot of different colours.

The picture at the top show nice colour.

Glaze has blue, Browns, Greens, Creams lot of different colours, very  pretty glaze. I use this glaze  a lot.

My Kiln is gas fired, with one burner. I have had a lot of different results with this glaze.

Inside this bowl you can see some colour in the middle, outside it is brown, on the top the glaze burnt off.

The Kiln got too hot.

You can see the colour on different spots on this planter.

If the kiln goes to hot, it  makes the colour brun away.

Now for the recipe for Rutile blue pottery Glaze. Shown Above.

Cone 9-10.

Gas Fired. Cone 9 down, cone 10 starting to fall.

Potash Feldspar.   40

Silica                        30

Whiting                   20

Kaolin                      10

Red Iron Oxide        5

Rutile                         5

To make this glaze mix all ingredients together. (Make sure you have a mask over you nose.)

Add water.

The glaze should stick to your finger.

When mixing glazers do a small batch first. test it on different shelves when firing, in your kiln, and different clays give you different results.

Results are always different.

More pictures of this glaze. I do really like this glaze, all the different colours it gives.

Happy Potting.
